Sunyani: The Foundation for Democratic Integrity (FDI), a civil society organisation, has called for an all-inclusive government reflecting the diverse voices of the population. This initiative seeks increased representation of women, youth, and marginalized, vulnerable, and other minority groups in government and decision-making processes.
According to Ghana News Agency, the foundation issued a statement asserting, "Democracy thrives when all citizens have a seat at the table." The statement called for adequate funding and resources for the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ). Signed by Mr. Kyei Sarpong, the Executive Director of FDI, the statement urged the government to enforce existing laws and ensure that public officials are held accountable for their actions and inactions.
The statement emphasized that CHRAJ requires sufficient funding and logistical support to fulfill its constitutional obligations of fighting corruption and preserving the basic rights and dignity of the citizenry. There is a need for the government to implement stringent anti-corruption measures and strengthen relevant public institutions in the anti-corruption space.
"In a bid to bolster democratic integrity in Ghana, the Executive Director of the FDI is implementing a comprehensive strategy aimed at strengthening democratic processes and institutions across the nation," the statement noted. It stressed the critical need for robust democratic systems to promote transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in governance while calling for increased funding for the Electoral Commission (EC) as well.
The statement further noted that the EC requires increased funding for training and the adoption of advanced technology to ensure accurate voter registration and efficient vote counting during the General Election. A credible electoral process remains fundamental to maintaining public trust in democracy.
The FDI plans to launch a nationwide civic education campaign aimed at increasing public awareness of democratic rights and responsibilities. The campaign will involve partnerships with schools, community organizations, and the media to educate citizens on the importance of active participation in democratic processes. This initiative intends to empower the public to demand accountability from public officials.
