A cabinet meeting held on Friday at the government palace in Kasbah devoted to the seawater desalination pole reviewed the progress made in implementing the desalination plants and saline groundwater desalination plants scheduled for the coming period, says a press release issued this evening by the Prime Ministry.
The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Najla Boden Romdhane, heard a presentation by Mosbah Hilali, CEO of the National Water Distribution Utility, and discussed the desalination programmes and their approved technologies, as well as the progress made in implementing the national desalination plan, including the commissioning of a number of desalination plants, as well as plans to secure drinking water for a number of entities and improve water quality in others.
The meeting recommended that efforts be made to rationalise water consumption, make better use of water resources and draw up a communication, awareness-raising and information plan involving all stakeholders.
The cabinet meeting called for the adoption of a plan to rationalise water use in the face of frequent droughts and water shortages, particularly in light of the climate changes affecting the Mediterranean basin in general and Tunisia in particular.
