In the era of climate change, the agricultural sector has become a national security issue that requires breaking with theories and taking action, said the Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, Abdelmonem Belati.
The current situation requires the adoption of a pragmatic approach that integrates food, water and energy in order to develop the agricultural sector, he added during a meeting held at the ministry's headquarters to present the work of the technical advisory committees for the promotion of the agricultural sectors.
To face the "new climatic situation", it has become necessary to develop agricultural strategies based on three pillars, including "resilience" to adapt to climate change, "sustainability" to fight water stress and "participatory work" to make agriculture a source of wealth and employment, he stressed.
The meeting, which was attended by representatives of various ministries, farmers' and employers' organisations, highlighted the strategy for promoting the olive and olive oil value chain in the context of climate change.
The meeting also focused on the new strategy for the development of the grain sector in Tunisia for 2023-2025, the plan for the development of the fodder sector until 2035 and the national strategy for the development of the dairy sector until 2035.
