WASSCE 2025 Exam Irregularities: Fourteen Individuals Arrested in Ghana

Kumasi: Fourteen individuals, including invigilators, teachers, and students, have been arrested for examination irregularities during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), as reported by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) on Wednesday. The arrests were made for various offenses, including impersonation, taking snapshots of examination questions, and possession of mobile phones in examination centers.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, provided a detailed breakdown of the incidents at a press briefing. The apprehended individuals were involved in acts of dishonesty, undermining the integrity of the examination process. At Adventists Senior High School in Bantama, Kumasi, 64 phones were confiscated from candidates during the Elective Mathematics Paper. Consequently, those students were relocated to the WAEC hall in Kumasi to continue with their exams.

Mr. Kapi revealed that there is a list of schools involved in irregularities, and the examination scripts from these schools will be thoroughly scrutinized. Students found with mobile phones in examination centers risk having their entire results canceled as per WAEC regulations. The council emphasized its commitment to enforcing the law against any school authorities compromising the examination's credibility.

In a related incident last Thursday, two individuals were arrested for impersonation at Ghana College, Kasoa, and were sentenced to six months imprisonment. Their accomplice received an eight-month sentence. Additionally, the proprietor of Christian IPS, Kukurantumi, and an invigilator were arrested for sharing examination content on a WhatsApp group. They have been handed over to the police for further investigation.

Other cases include Ebenezer Fynn of Saint Vincent College, arraigned for impersonation, and Hanna Lariba from Yeji Senior High School, arrested for impersonation at Steps to Destiny SHS, Yeji. Another impersonator, Mumuni Abdul Hafiz, evaded capture by the monitoring team. In Asante-Bekwai, Kodua Desmond was remanded in custody for examination irregularities at Abbot College, while Maxwell Chamba and Amaglo Livingstone were arrested at Sefa Bonsu Royal SHS for impersonation.

Mr. Kapi reiterated WAEC's commitment to conducting credible examinations that genuinely reflect candidates' academic performance. He called on all stakeholders, supervisors, and invigilators to support efforts to promote fairness, discipline, and transparency in the examination process. The council assured the public of maintaining high standards of integrity and sanctioning any violations of examination rules.

The WASSCE for School Candidates began on August 5, 2025, with Visual Art Project work and continued with written papers from August 18, 2025. The examination is set to conclude on September 19, 2025, across 703 centers nationwide.
