Accra: GH Schools, a provider of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), has launched a new 24-hour TVET education initiative aimed at enhancing access while maintaining quality and competence. The initiative, named 'Round-the-Clock Education System,' is designed to make TVET accessible anytime and anywhere, with a focus on hands-on academic experiences that promote critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and innovation.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Leslie Addo-Listowell, the Rector of GH Schools, stated that this program aligns with the Government's 24-Hour Economic Agenda. The initiative aims not only to improve livelihoods and foster prosperity but also to address the large numbers of applicants during the admission period. "Because of our significant impact, we are always oversubscribed, especially in our fashion, catering, and multimedia departments. Last semester, 254 students applied for the fashion course, and we were supposed to admit 150, but we admitted 158, leaving 96 students," he explained.
With a current student population of 10,000, the institution offers morning learning sessions from 0800 to 1200 hours and afternoon sessions from 1300 to 1700 hours. "We are adding a dawn session from 0400 to 0800 hours for those who like to learn before going to work," Mr. Addo-Listowell noted. Additionally, an evening school from 1800 to 2200 hours is available for those who prefer to work first. The institution is also considering a midnight school option.
The Round-the-Clock Education System serves as a development pathway for individuals without certification to apply for an internal certificate of competence, catering to those who need practical skills for the job market and entrepreneurship. The Commission for Technical, Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) has accredited GH Schools for their eight programs, with plans underway to finalize accreditation for the High National Diploma programs.
Madam Samlara Baah Koduah, Lead for Social Transformation and Civic Engagement at the Government's 24-hour Economic Agenda Secretariat, praised GH Schools for pioneering this 24-hour system. She emphasized that the Round-the-Clock Education System aligns with 'Aspire 24,' a sub-program of the 24-hour Economic Agenda, which focuses on promoting youth skills, digital skills, and technology integration.
"We will be partnering with GH Schools to create opportunities for the skilled personnel being produced. We are looking at how to help the trained professionals to work effectively post training," Madam Koduah stated. Mr. Christian Tetteh Badger, Municipal Chief Executive of Okaikwei North Municipality, encouraged the school authorities to continue impacting the human resource development, adding that the Assembly would support GH Schools.
He highlighted that the Government's reset agenda requires all citizens, including students, to adopt a renewed mindset focused on responsible and proper conduct for national development.
