Aflao: The people of Ketu South Municipality in the Volta Region have expressed their gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the plan to construct a US$30 million ultramodern market project in Aflao. The project is to be funded through a grant from the Chinese government.
According to Ghana News Agency, the development fulfills President Mahama’s campaign promise made prior to the 2024 general election, which was outlined in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto. Madam Dzifa Abla Gomashie, the Ketu South Constituency Member of Parliament, highlighted during a site inspection ceremony in Aflao that the market project would transform the area into a commercial hub, boost cross-border trade, support ECOWAS integration, and align with the African Continental Free Trade Area’s broader goals.
She further explained that the project aims to provide modern infrastructure for trade, create opportunities for traders, and improve the overall business environment. The project is expected to enhance economic activity, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for residents by providing a modern and safe environment for trading.
Mr. Tong Defa, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, expressed satisfaction with the project site and emphasized the strong partnership between Ghana and China. He mentioned that the project showcases President Mahama’s commitment to promoting economic development and improving citizens’ lives.
Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, praised the Chinese government for their support. Meanwhile, Togbui Adzongaga Amenya Fiti V, the Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, confirmed that 159 acres of land have been allocated for the project and commended both the Chinese government and President Mahama for the initiative.
Residents engaged by Ghana News Agency expressed excitement about the project, which is expected to commence soon and have a significant impact on the local economy.
