IFRC Initiates Training for Cholera Response Volunteers

Accra: The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) has extended its support to train 80 volunteers in Cholera response efforts aimed at education, awareness, and eradication of the epidemic in affected regions. This training is strategically timed as the rainy season approaches, equipping volunteers with the necessary skills to address community needs effectively.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Faith Dube, the IFRC Cholera Surge Representative, emphasized the critical need to curb the epidemic through a community-based approach, leveraging the volunteer force for epidemic control. The initiative, set to last three months, will also see the establishment of Oral Hydration Points in areas predominantly affected by Cholera, providing first aid. Additionally, resources such as chlorine and handwashing facilities will be procured for these communities.

Mr. Benjamin Acquah, the Western Regional Manager for the Red Cross, revealed that volunteers from seven districts are participating in a thorough four-day training program. Complementary activities, including community clean-ups, public engagement sessions, and information dissemination via radio and community centers, will enhance the educational aspect of the initiative.

Mr. Frank Ofosu-Asante, Regional Chair of the Red Cross, highlighted that fishing communities have been identified as critical hotspots for controlling the epidemic. Dr. Edward Donkor, the National Vice President of Red Cross, expressed concern over the fatalities associated with Cholera and urged communities to maintain cleanliness to prevent the spread of the disease.

The training curriculum covers various aspects of Cholera, including understanding the disease, prevention, stigma, detection, and a refresher on basic Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT), among other topics.
