Kumasi: The Ashanti Regional Police Command has initiated a manhunt to apprehend suspects who allegedly planned an armed robbery in the Bosomtwe district. The incident occurred on Sunday evening when the suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled upon spotting a police patrol team approaching on the Aputuogya-Bekwai road.
According to Ghana News Agency, a statement by DSP Godwin Ahianyo, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, revealed that the police discovered firearms and ammunition in the abandoned vehicle after conducting a search. The vehicle, a white Toyota Sienta with registration number NR 289-24, was suspiciously parked near a bushy area along the roadside.
Two male adults were seen standing beside the vehicle, allegedly smoking a substance suspected to be a narcotic drug. Upon noticing the police vehicle, the individuals fled into a nearby bush and managed to escape despite the officers' pursuit. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered an AK-47 assault rifle, a locally manufactured firearm, loaded magazines, loose rounds of ammunition, and other items indicative of a planned crime.
The items retrieved included one AK-47 assault rifle (Serial No. 29546), one locally manufactured firearm, two AK-47 magazines each loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, and four packets of AK-47 ammunition, each containing 25 rounds. Additional items found were seven loose rounds of ammunition, a pair of Wellington boots, a Huawei smartphone, cowrie shells, a pair of sandals, a Ghana Card, and a Temporary Driver's License, with the name withheld for investigative purposes.
The police have impounded the vehicle at the Kuntanase Police Station, retaining all recovered items as exhibits for the ongoing investigation. The Ashanti Regional Police Command remains committed to preventing violent crime and ensuring the safety and security of residents. They urge the public to provide information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
