Keta: Mr. Che Tsatsu Sorkpor, the Mental Health Coordinator at the Keta Municipal Hospital, has warned students about the dangers of drug abuse. He said drug abuse also has a devastating impact on mental health, academic performance, and overall well-being. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Sorkpor stressed that substance abuse could lead to adverse outcomes such as anxiety, depression, and psychosis, exacerbating pre-existing mental health conditions or causing new ones. He addressed the pressing challenges of drug abuse among the youth, especially students, highlighting the potential for difficulties in managing emotions and behaviors. Mr. Sorkpor explained that substance abuse could worsen mental health issues, causing feelings of sadness, anxiety, and paranoia. He noted that hallucinogenic drugs like magic mushrooms could worsen mental health issues, leading to detachment from surroundings and frightening flashbacks. Stimulant drugs like cocaine, RED, and glue could trigger paranoia, psychosis, and sc hizophrenia, while cannabis use was linked to a heightened risk of anxiety and depression. He further emphasized that drug abuse in students could negatively impact academic performance, potentially leading to poor grades, absenteeism, and decreased motivation. Students who use drugs may struggle to concentrate, retain information, and complete assignments, ultimately affecting their career prospects. Mr. Sorkpor recommended a multi-faceted approach to address drug abuse, including education and awareness programs, counseling, and treatment services. He advocated for accessible and confidential support services to help students overcome addiction and related mental health issues. Counseling should take many forms, such as individual therapy, group counseling, and peer support programs, to help students address underlying issues, develop coping mechanisms, and manage emotions and behaviors. He also suggested treatment programs like medical detox, medication-assisted treatment, and behavioral therapy to help students manage addiction and improve their mental and physical health. Ghana News Agency gathered that raising awareness about the risks and consequences of drug abuse was deemed crucial in preventing substance abuse among young students in the area. Understanding the impact of drug use on mental health and academic performance can help make informed choices and seek help when needed. It was revealed that there is a need to reduce stigma surrounding mental health and substance abuse to encourage students to seek help without fear of judgment or discrimination. Further information gathered by the GNA indicated that about 35 youths from various stages of education, such as junior and senior high schools, had earlier visited Keta Municipal Hospital for mental health treatment linked to drug abuse. Some residents in Keta called on various security agencies, stakeholders, and others to help crack down on the act in the area to save the future of the nation.
