SEFWI-WIAWSO: The Western North Regional Fire Service recorded a notable increase in fire outbreaks last year, with 126 incidents compared to 93 cases in 2023.
According to Ghana News Agency, Reverend Father Michael Nunoo, the Deputy Regional Commander, shared these statistics during an interview. The region experienced 46 domestic fires, 20 commercial, 17 vehicular, 17 bush fires, 15 industrial, and 11 electrical fires. Reverend Nunoo attributed the rise in fire incidents to the extended dry season and various human activities. He emphasized the need for enhanced volunteer training in communities to better manage fire outbreaks.
The Deputy Regional Commander highlighted ongoing efforts, such as market education campaigns and ensuring industries possess fire certificates and extinguishers. These initiatives include market patrols in major markets throughout the region, which successfully prevented any market fires last year.
However, Reverend Nunoo expressed concern over the lack of fire stations in three out of the nine districts: Akontombra, Bodi, and Suaman. He urged the incoming district Chief Executives to prioritize establishing fire stations in these areas. Additionally, he advised residents to switch off electrical appliances when leaving homes, offices, and workplaces to help mitigate fire risks.
