Sustainable Agriculture Seen as Crucial for Food Security in Africa: ISP Africa Global Chairman

Accra: Dr. Shermal Perara, the Chairman of the Incorporated Society of Planters (ISP) Africa Chapter, has highlighted the importance of sustainable agriculture in ensuring food security across Africa. This statement was made during the media launch preceding the First Year Anniversary Symposium and Initial Technical Training of ISP Africa's African Regional Chapter in Accra.

According to Ghana News Agency, the event is set to take place in Accra, Ghana, from Thursday, May 22 to Friday, May 23. It is expected to attract delegates from various parts of the world including Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Europe, the United States, and several African countries. Themed 'AgriUnity: Empowering Sustainable Agriculture in Africa,' the symposium aims to equip smallholders with the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance their agricultural outputs and improve their living standards.

Dr. Perara underscored the need to develop a significant land bank to bolster commercial agriculture plantations while ensuring environmental and wildlife protection. He stated, "We are focusing on developing a significant land bank to support commercial agriculture plantations, while protecting the environment and wildlife."

Dr. Fatai Afolabi, Vice Chairman of ISPA, emphasized the importance of building capacity in agriculture with a focus on expertise and professionalism. He remarked, "Africa is the base for enormous systems with capacity. We in agriculture should take it as a practice. Planting is critical to agricultural as what you plant is what you will reap."

Mr. Afolabi conveyed that hosting the symposium in Africa will aid ISP in achieving its objectives of enhancing agricultural production and food security across the continent. Mr. Chris Foli, Chairman of ISP Africa's Ghana Chapter, noted the timeliness of producing affordable processed food through training and commercial agriculture. The event also marked the unveiling of Mr. Chris Foli as the Chairman of the Ghana Chapter of ISP Africa.

Incorporated on October 8, 1919, the ISP boasts over 6,000 members both locally and internationally.
