Sunyani Traders and Mechanics Face Uncertainty as GRIDCo Clears Market Enclave

Sunyani: Some market women and mechanics around the Nana Bosoma Central Market enclave in the Sunyani Municipality have appealed for support, as the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) evacuates them from its transmission lines in the market enclave.

According to Ghana News Agency, their appeals followed a massive decongestion exercise undertaken by GRIDCo on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, putting most of them in a state of despair. During a visit to the enclave, the agency noticed that almost all the shops, stores, and structures along GRIDCo's high-tension transmission lines in the area had been demolished.

The Ghana News Agency observed that some of the affected traders and mechanics were anxiously picking their belongings and working tools from the debris as some fully armed police personnel stood on guard. Some squatters, including hawkers, petty traders, and head potters, as well as wheelbarrow and truck pushers using the enclave for shelter, were also noticed in a state of despondency.

Though some of the GRIDCo officials sighted at the scene declined to comment on the exercise, the agency learned that the company had already notified the squatters to relocate. Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Madam Hagar Addae, one of the affected traders, said they had no place to relocate to and called on the authorities at the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to come to their aid.

An auto mechanic affected by the exercise, Stephen Asiedu, noted that moving them out of the Sunyani main garage would slow down and gradually collapse their businesses, and appealed to the city authorities to create spaces for them. However, efforts to contact Mr. Vincent Antwi Agyei, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, were unsuccessful.
