Accra: Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Alban Bagbin, has issued a stern warning to Members of Parliament (MPs) regarding the importance of respecting the authority of the Speaker during parliamentary proceedings. This comes in response to recent chaotic scenes that unfolded on the floor of Parliament.
According to Ghana News Agency, Speaker Bagbin emphasized that the powers of the Speaker are enshrined in the law and highlighted the potential consequences for MPs' career progression if these powers are fully invoked. He referred MPs to the Parliament Act 1965 and the Standing Orders of the House, which outline these powers in detail.
The warning followed an incident where the First Deputy Speaker refused to allow Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, an NPP Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore, to read a statement, leading to disorderly conduct. Speaker Bagbin reminded MPs that the Speaker's rulings are final and that there are established procedures for contesting such decisions without resorting to verbal confrontations.
In his address, Speaker Bagbin urged MPs to uphold the rules and maintain the integrity of Parliament. He highlighted the global reputation of Ghana's Parliament and its significance to the MPs' professional image. He encouraged them to adhere to parliamentary conduct that reflects positively on the institution.
Speaker Bagbin also shared his own experiences, highlighting his leadership roles in African and international parliamentary associations. He used the opportunity to mentor younger MPs, advising them to follow proper procedures for parliamentary statements and to avoid actions that could damage their careers.
The Speaker concluded by cautioning all involved in the recent disruptions to refrain from such behavior and to familiarize themselves with the House's rules and regulations.
