Accra: Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, confidently declared that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is on the path to resurgence, emphasizing that the party has merely stumbled, not been defeated. This message was delivered during the NPP's Annual Delegates Conference held at the University of Ghana Stadium, where he urged party members to overcome despair and focus on renewal, unity, and discipline to reclaim the party's legacy.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Afenyo-Markin underscored the importance of the youth and the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) in revitalizing the party. He advised them to remain true to party values and engage with elders respectfully, highlighting their role as the party's energy, voice, and conscience. He urged the youth to absorb the wisdom of elders and lead with clarity.
Reflecting on the 2024 electoral defeat, Mr. Afenyo-Markin dismissed the notion of failure. He attributed the loss to unprecedented global and domestic challenges, including the banking sector cleanup, the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and a hung Parliament. He asserted that the NPP demonstrated leadership by maintaining stronger GDP growth than the economy it inherited in 2017, despite the crises.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin also criticized the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, accusing it of taking undue credit for the NPP's achievements by rebranding them as new policy initiatives. He urged party members not to be deceived by such tactics and to recognize the NPP's contributions.
The Minority Leader called on members to embrace the Conference theme, 'Rebuilding Together with Our Values,' and work collectively toward a victorious 2028. He emphasized the importance of returning to the party's foundational spirit of sacrifice, loyalty, and conviction to rebuild and rise again.
The two-day conference, from July 19 to 20, gathered over 5,500 delegates who focused on constitutional amendments and strategizing for the future. The event highlighted the need for healing, discipline, and renewed grassroots engagement within the party.
