Accra: A new German government will maintain its support for Ghana's economic recovery, emphasizing the country's role as a democratic leader in West Africa, according to Mr. Daniel Krull, the German Ambassador to Ghana. He stated that irrespective of the coalition formed post-election, Germany's commitment to Ghana will remain steadfast.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Krull's remarks came following the recent German Federal election, during which the German Embassy and Goethe-Institut hosted a watch party. The Conservative Party, represented by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU) and led by Mr. Friedrich Merz, emerged victorious but fell short of their anticipated vote-share of 30 percent, securing only 28.6 percent.
Mr. Krull reassured that any coalition government formed would not disrupt Germany's bilateral cooperation with Ghana. He expressed confidence that all parties involved in coalition talks are committed to maintaining the strong ties between the two nations. The ambassador highlighted that German parliamentarians from both the Conservative and Social Democratic parties have engaged with Ghana, fostering robust bilateral relations.
Madam Anna Wassesfall, Resident Representative of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, noted that the election results reflected the sovereignty of the German people. She highlighted issues such as illegal migration, economic progress, and security concerning the Ukraine conflict as pivotal in the election discourse. She also emphasized that potential coalition formations between the CDU and SPD could enhance Germany's collaborative efforts with African nations.
The election event featured a blend of German culture, cuisine, and politics. Attendees enjoyed traditional German dishes and beer, creating a sense of home for the German expats in Ghana. Michael Schneider, a German citizen residing in Accra, expressed his excitement about witnessing democratic processes and sharing the experience with others in Ghana.
A symbolic voting exercise was conducted during the event, where attendees voted for their preferred parties, resulting in a win for the Green Party with 32.7 percent.
