Goat Stealing: Court Orders Police to Ascertain Age of Accused

Accra: The Dansoman Circuit Court has ordered the Police to send an accused person, Fatawu Issaka, to the Police Hospital to ascertain his real age. Issaka is accused of attempting to steal two goats from the house of Osei Asibey Poku, located in Awoshie, Accra.

According to Ghana News Agency, the prosecution claimed that Issaka was 20 years old. However, his physical appearance suggested otherwise, prompting the court, presided over by Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, to order a medical examination to verify his age. The court did not take Issaka's plea and adjourned the matter to February 19, keeping him in a correctional home. Issaka faces charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and stealing.

Issaka's alleged accomplices, known as Aziz Moro and another individual named Godsway, are reportedly at large. Osei Asibey Poku, the complainant and a facility officer, resides at the Awoshie market in Accra, while Issaka, a motorbike mechanic, also lives in Awoshie.

The incident occurred on February 5, 2025, when Poku was awakened by his dog's barking at around 1:48 a.m. Upon investigation, he saw Issaka and two others standing beside his fence wall. Poku called neighbors, including Alfred Boateng, who helped surround the suspects. While questioning them, Aziz and Godsway managed to escape, leaving Fatawu behind.

Issaka was arrested and taken to the police station, where he confessed to being at Poku's house with the intention of stealing goats alongside the absconded accomplices. He claimed ignorance about whether the goats were actually stolen, as he remained at the entrance while his accomplices entered the compound.

The Police, accompanied by Poku and Issaka, visited the crime scene, discovering a sack containing two dead goats at the corner of the wall. Issaka identified them as the animals they had stolen and killed in the compound.

Police investigations revealed that Issaka is allegedly a notorious criminal with prior arrests at various police stations within the division. During interrogation, Issaka admitted to conspiring with his at-large accomplices to commit the crime. The police continue to pursue a manhunt for the two other suspects as investigations proceed.
