Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has extended financial support to Ghana’s top football teams, Bibiani Gold Stars and Asante Kotoko, by presenting $50,000.00 to each club at the Presidency in Accra. This initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to aid the teams in their pursuit of success in the 2025-2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League and Confederations Cup.
According to Ghana News Agency, the President emphasized that the funds are intended to alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with international travel, such as airfare and accommodation. Reflecting on the illustrious history of Ghanaian football, President Mahama praised the past achievements of clubs like Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak during the 1960s and 70s. He urged current players to strive to reclaim Ghana’s former glory on the continental stage.
President Mahama expressed pride in Ghana’s strong sporting heritage and pledged ongoing support for the teams. He highlighted the government’s commitment to reducing unnecessary expenditures, which has allowed for increased investment in sports. The upcoming 2026 budget will include provisions for building seven new stadiums across the regions to enhance football infrastructure and competitiveness.
Additionally, the government has initiated a Sports Development Fund, with plans to provide each premier league club with GH?1 million at the start of the 2025-2026 season. This fund aims to support clubs in both local and international competitions, with contributions from corporate businesses and the government.
The President reminded the players of the high expectations placed on them by millions of Ghanaians, especially young aspiring footballers. He stressed the unifying power of football, noting that investing in the sport contributes to national unity.
President Mahama also highlighted the importance of a strong domestic league for the success of Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars. He encouraged players to remain focused and goal-oriented, emphasizing that scoring goals is the essence of football. He advised them to stay disciplined and united, assuring them of the nation’s support.
The event was attended by several key figures, including Mr. Kofi Eddie Adams, Minister of Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association, and Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director-General of the National Sports Authority. While the management and players of Asante Kotoko were present, the Bibiani Gold Stars management attended without the players due to their scheduled match against JS Kabylie.
