IMF Urges Africa to Strengthen Economic Fundamentals Without Excuses

Washington D.C.: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged Ghana and its neighboring African countries to strengthen economic fundamentals, advising, "Do not give excuses, but put your house in order."

According to Ghana News Agency, Kristalina Georgieva, the IMF Managing Director, speaking at a press briefing on the Fund's Global Policy Agenda for 2025 in Washington D.C., recommended reducing tax evasion, boosting domestic revenue, removing trade barriers, and addressing corruption and conflicts. She emphasized that while the African continent boasts some of the fastest-growing economies, there remains significant room for improvement through deeper collaborations.

Georgieva highlighted Africa's potential, noting its abundant minerals, natural resources, and young population. She advocated for a more unified and collaborative continent to transform Africa into an economic powerhouse. Despite the current trade tariff shocks having minimal direct effects on most African nations, she warned of significant indirect impacts.

She noted that different countries face unique challenges, but some basic recommendations apply across Africa, including to nations like Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, and Cote d'Ivoire. Georgieva proposed solutions such as building financial buffers for economic shocks, broadening the tax base through technology, and addressing infrastructure challenges to enhance growth and trade.

On monetary policy, Georgieva underscored the importance of domestic assessment and targeted strategies to control inflation. She urged a change in the continent's image, asserting that corruption or conflict in one country casts a shadow over the entire region.
