Prosecution of Journalist, Police Given Seven Days to File Disclosures

Accra: An Accra Circuit Court has ordered the police to file its disclosures in the case involving Emmanuel Kwakye Asare, a broadcast journalist, who is facing charges over the publication of false news. Circuit Court 8 mandated that the filing be completed within seven days to facilitate the court’s Case Management Conference and set a date for the trial to commence. The case has been adjourned to September 29, 2025.

According to Ghana News Agency, Asare was granted bail of GHC100,000 on August 27 after being held on remand for more than two weeks. He pleaded not guilty to charges of publishing false news related to an August 6 helicopter crash that resulted in eight fatalities. During a live broadcast on his program ‘Nsepafie’ on Wontumi Radio on August 9, Asare allegedly stated that ‘if your family member is part of those who died, you must hold President Mahama responsible because he is aware of everything.’

The prosecution alleges that Asare accused President Mahama of causing the helicopter crash at Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region. His statement reportedly caused widespread public uproar. Following intelligence reports, Asare was arrested on August 12 and admitted to the offense in his caution statement.
