Tema: The Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA) is set to impose sanctions on traders who disregarded the directive to close their shops and partake in the National Sanitation Day exercise on Saturday. Mr. Ludwig Teye Totimeh, the Tema West Municipal Chief Executive, announced this measure during the second National Sanitation Day cleanup exercise.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Totimeh noted that traders who ignored the order to shut their shops from 05:00 hours to 10:00 hours and participate in cleaning their premises have been identified. He emphasized that sanctions would be imposed as a deterrent, encouraging more residents to actively clean their surroundings instead of leaving the task to a few individuals.
Mr. Totimeh highlighted the importance of collective participation in the cleanup exercise, especially for traders along the principal roads, indicating that unified efforts would ease the workload. He affirmed that sanctions would be applied to those businesses that remained open for trading during the designated cleanup period.
The Municipal Chief Executive explained that while the first cleanup exercise focused on the Texpo to Klagon area, the second concentrated on Communities Two and Five, targeting medians, markets, and children's parks. He also revealed plans for the assembly to vacate traders in the Community Two market to facilitate demolition and reconstruction, due to the poor condition of structures that pose safety risks.
Mr. James Enu, Member of Parliament for Tema West, participated in the exercise alongside other officials. He emphasized the significance of the President John Dramani Mahama's initiative as part of a reset agenda aimed at maintaining national cleanliness. Mr. Enu urged residents to embrace cleaning as a cultural practice to prevent diseases and flooding caused by clogged drains impeding rainwater drainage.
