Nine Dead in Ukraine’s Odessa After Heavy Rainfall Causes Flooding

Odessa: At least nine people have died in floods caused by torrential rains in the southern Ukrainian port city of Odessa, on the Black Sea, authorities said on Wednesday. The victims included a young girl, according to the Ukrainian civil protection agency.

According to Ghana News Agency, rescue teams evacuated more than 360 people and over 200 vehicles from inundated areas. The downpour, which began Tuesday, brought as much rain in seven hours as the city normally receives in two months, Odessa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov said on Telegram. He said more bad weather is expected on Wednesday.

He described the situation as difficult but under control, with rescue efforts taking place around the clock. Odessa, already hard hit by Russia’s full-scale invasion, is now grappling with the added toll of the floods.
