Accra: The hospitality sector has been identified as a 'perfect model' for Ghana's proposed 24-hour economy, having already operated round-the-clock for years, Mr. Ralph Ayitey, the Chief Executive Officer of Coconut Grove Regency Hotel, has said.
According to Ghana News Agency, in an interview on Thursday, Mr. Ayitey highlighted that the concept of a 24-hour economy was not new to the hospitality industry. He pointed out that elements such as food and beverage services, including night-time street vendors, and transport systems like Uber and Bolt, already operate 24-hours.
Mr. Ayitey expressed that the initiative is beneficial but emphasized the need for increased private sector participation, provided that the modalities and incentives are clearly defined. He urged the government to consider factors that would stimulate demand, making the extended working hours viable for stakeholders in the sector.
He mentioned the planned development of the 1,000-kilometre stretch of the Volta Lake as an opportunity to promote tourism. He envisioned tourists cruising from Elmina to the north, stopping to enjoy local food and activities, which would positively impact the local economy. He also noted that tourists visiting major shopping malls could contribute to economic growth.
Mr. Ayitey concluded by stating that with clear guidelines and incentives, the private sector would support the 24-hour model, ultimately benefiting the nation's Gross Domestic Product and its citizens, with the hospitality sector leading the way.
