Sunyani: The Bono Regional Directorate of the Fisheries Commission has extended its support to the Sunyani Central Prisons by donating 1,000 tilapia fingerlings and two bags of feed, aimed at enhancing the prison's aquaculture project. This initiative is part of the prison's efforts to improve the nutritional value of meals for inmates and bolster food security within the facility.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Fisheries Commission had previously equipped the prison with two tarpaulin tanks, which are currently being utilized for catfish cultivation. During a ceremony at the Sunyani Central Prisons, Mr. Ivan Venkonwine Kaleo, Assistant Director at the Bono Regional Directorate of the Fisheries Commission, emphasized that this support is part of the Commission's broader community support and aquaculture development programme. This programme aims to impart sustainable fish farming skills to institutions and communities.
Mr. Kaleo further stated that the Commission is dedicated to enhancing the aquaculture project by providing training on crucial technical skills such as pond management, optimal feeding practices, and efficient harvesting techniques. This commitment is expected to empower both personnel and inmates involved in the initiative.
Chief Superintendent of Prisons (CSP) Charles Nana Addai-Boateng expressed gratitude towards the Commission for its contribution, highlighting that the fish farming project aligns with the 'Think Prisons 360 Degrees' initiative. This initiative focuses on agricultural mechanization and wealth creation to support inmates' welfare by enhancing nutrition, imparting vocational skills, and aiding their rehabilitation.
