Tamale: Residents of Tamale, led by the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA), have undertaken a massive clean-up exercise aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness and community responsibility.
According to Ghana News Agency, the exercise covered the Central Business District and other parts of the metropolis, bringing together a cross-section of the public, including Assembly Members, traditional authorities, traders, youth groups, NGOs, security agencies, political party representatives, and the media.
Participants desilted drains, swept streets, and cleared refuse from public spaces across the metropolis as part of efforts to give the city a cleaner look and to encourage sustained participation in environmental sanitation.
Alhaji Adam Abubakari Takoro, Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, commended the high turnout and collaboration among various groups, describing it as a demonstration of civic unity and commitment to a healthier environment. He stated, 'This initiative is not just a one-day activity. It is a call to civic responsibility and collective action. Starting today, the first Saturday of every month will be observed as Sanitation Day, during which shops will remain closed from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. to allow everyone to participate in cleaning our communities.'
Alhaji Takoro stressed that maintaining a clean environment was crucial in preventing diseases, protecting the ecosystem, and promoting economic growth. He urged residents to sustain the enthusiasm beyond the monthly exercises and make cleanliness a daily habit.
Assembly Members and representatives of participating organizations also pledged to continue mobilizing their communities to actively take part in future clean-up activities.
