OKRA Projects Commissions New Classroom Block for Lume-Ahugakope JHS

Accra: OKRA Projects, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has commissioned a three-unit classroom block for the Lume Ahugakope RC/MA Junior High School in the Akatsi South Municipality to improve academic excellence. The project, according to the school authorities, would serve as a beacon of hope, opportunity, and progress for the Ghanaian school-going child since most of them studied under difficult conditions over the years.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Cyprus Nii Sackey, Country Director of OKRA Projects, stated that the block includes offices, a toilet facility, and a polytank. The project received partial assistance from community members and Mr. Bernard Ahiafor, MP for Akatsi South, who is also the first Deputy Speaker of Parliament. He revealed that the project, which commenced in January and was completed in July this year, was the 50th in Ghana and the eighth in Volta, with similar ones at Ave Atiglime, Avevi, Have, and others.

Mr. Nii Sackey commended stakeholders for their commitment, especially the communal spirit of the community members, which contributed to the timely execution of the project. He urged the school's management committee, including the teachers and pupils, to ensure proper maintenance of the structure.

Mr. Daniel Dagba, the Municipal Chief Executive for Akatsi South, led the commissioning event and thanked OKRA for what he described as a valuable addition to enhance teaching and learning. He encouraged parents and teachers to focus on the academic improvement of all pupils by providing necessary infrastructure and relevant educational items. He advised, "Walk your child to school when you can, check the exercise book every evening, and speak life-giving words. When we meet at PTA, come up with ideas, not only complaints."

Mr. Dagba also expressed gratitude to the community elders for their support. Mr. Karim Ayaana Umar, the Director of Education for Akatsi South, remarked in a speech read on his behalf that the gesture represents an important investment in the future of young students and called for collaboration for quality education.

Mr. Moses Adade, Headteacher of the school, expressed his gratitude to OKRA and everyone who contributed to the success of the project. He appealed for the provision of an ICT lab, a teacher's bungalow, furniture, and other items to further support quality education in the area.

Mr. Jacob Nyasorgbor, the Assemblyman for the area, urged the Education Directorate and the Municipal Assembly to continue supporting education in the community with resources. He commended the teachers for their commitment to the welfare of students. The school currently has a population of 271 pupils with thirteen teaching staff.
